'12 Monkeys' is a dystopian film set on a desolate planet Earth that has been virtually wiped out by a viral infection. The film is said to be based on a French short film, and sets its scene in 2035, with a convict named Joe who is sent by a peculiar group of scientists on a mission back in time to the 1990s to trace the reason behind the viral infection that wiped out 99% of Earth's population. The film manipulates time and challenges both the characters and the viewer's perceptions of reality, using strange camera techniques and colours to encapsulate its eeriness.

The film does not have a happy ending. Although our main character manages to find answers, his reality is questioned as the film progresses, and the film essentially ends where it begins as it manipulates time in a somewhat cyclical nature.
