Casablanca (1942)

overview

With WWII as its backdrop, this is a tale of love lost and ultimate sacrifice, amid a politically tumultuous period in history. Set in the refugee exodus of Casablanca, the story follows Rick, who has made a name for himself in Casablanca, owning a popular club in the area. His tough, cool exterior is thwarted by the resurgence of a former lover of his during the war, Ilsa. Ilsa, who seeks refuge from Nazi captors for herself and her politically active, anti-Nazi husband, seeks help from Rick to flee Casablanca without being caught out by authorities. However, amid this political turmoil, Ilsa and Rick must wrestle their feelings for one another in a situation that only grows more complicated as the movie continues.

sPOILER aLERT!

Despite the resurfacing love between Rick and Ilsa influencing Ilsa to want to leave her husband for Rick, Rick does the “honourable” thing and helps her escape Casablanca with her husband, making for one of the most iconic movie endings in romantic cinema to date.
