Meet jarry pitboi

cape town native jarry pitboi is no new face to the gusher community, comming into the mix in the earlier stages he became a familiar name on the g streets with his consistent drops and unique delivery. first popping up during the gusher fridays (a month where we released a bunch of music by emerging artists every friday) jarry’s don’t talk quickly became a favourite amongst the community. since then he has put out an array of singles, eps and collabrative projects. it only felt appropriate to start ofF gusher meets with one of our oldest friends. meet jarry pitboi.

GUSHER:

Do you mind introducing yourself, what you do/ make and where you from?

JARRY PITBOI:

I go by the name Jarry Pitboi, I'm from Cape Town, South Africa, born and raised. For now, I make my art through music and in the near future I'm very keen to explore some other artistic mediums, not sure which ones now though.

GUSHER:

You're not a first on the GUSHER* platform, the first time we were introduced to you was DON'T TALK which we released on GUSHER SOUND in 2020... did you meet any other artists and people through that? And what was the general reaction from the community?

JARRY PITBOI:

So funny story about that song is that I didn't love it like 100%, I had like an 80% liking towards it lol but definitely thought it was worth releasing & at the time I only knew Shoka & Uncle from Gusher. I think Gusher found me before I found them, the perfect love story I'd say, they enjoyed one of my previous EP releases titled "Bodhi All the People" and that's how we connected. Anyway, long story short, I asked them to release "Don't talk" on their sc and the reception I received was crazy, made me realize how I was overthinking things! Through that release I've made friends and even frequent collaborators namely, bahbahroo, Jake, Phenyo Waze, Yagatomo, Ofentse Meloa, Peter Matlowa and few other people who I now even consider close friends.

GUSHER:

Always interested in knowing what's an artists favourite thing they've made by them... is there a song you've made that you feel is your best? Which song and why?

JARRY PITBOI:

It's definitely my most recent work, I guess while writing this lol who knows what could be out once This interview gets released. It's a two song EP titled "For Light 2 Come Thru". The reason this is my favourite work is because I feel like it's the most open and honest I've been on a project. I feel like I pride myself on vulnerability so just releasing that project gave me a sense of fulfillment.

GUSHER:

Your lyrics are filled with very specific topics, from mental health to spirituality, is there a reason why u choose that over the more casual and popular topics?

JARRY PITBOI:

I feel like those are my topics because I live them. I can speak about the more popular topics but then I'd just question the impact of my music. Like I said, I try to push the boundaries of being as open and as authentic as possible with every new release and I don't think there is a better way to do that other than to just be 100% yourself in everything you put out.

GUSHER:

Is there a specific artist who influenced your type of sound?

JARRY PITBOI:

I feel like growing up hearing listening to rap music is what made me want to make music, I literally had a phase where I'm only listening to strictly rap, you would not find anything else on my phone lol I get tunnel vision sometimes but definitely rap is my main influence. I listened to Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Earl Sweatshirt, Joey Bada$$, Mac Miller & Drake. Those were the artists I'd say that made me want to make music and ultimately influenced who I am today as a musical artist.

GUSHER:

If you weren't making music, what would you be doing?

JARRY PITBOI:

To be honest, I don't even know, hopefully something creative. I do have imaginations of myself just like being like the best accountant ever! Even though I was completely horrible at the subject but I guess that's what I thought my mom wanted me to be loL

GUSHER:

Are you working on anything new?

JARRY PITBOI:

Yes I'm always working on something new, no defined concepts for an ep yet though but definitely , a lot of the music on the way in terms of collaborations and even some singles. What I've been working on recently is just work with other artists. Doesn't even need to be a feature or production credits. I enjoy mixing and mastering for artists as well.

GUSHER:

The five most important things in your life?

JARRY PITBOI:

Love, Community, Art, Fun, FIFA

GUSHER:

Anything else you want people to know about you?

JARRY PITBOI:

That I really love FIFA and will probably be better than most people at the game! Also that I believe in the power of breathwork so if you don't know about it, go check it out and if you're in Cape Town, hit me up because we do breathwork sessions in the Forrest every Sunday!

GUSHER:

10 favourite songs?
