Duval Timothy: Carrying Colour

Every Duval Timothy record feels like it has a very specific pallete to it. like the room and the clothes worn shared a tone. somehow the colours are translated into sound. all the album covers match the sounds.

I heard "slave" by duval timothy last year june, i remember being addicted to the song, for whatever reason i never dug deeper until i recently when back for second listen. i was listening to a song called "Ball" from his 2017 album Sen Am i was caught.

SEN AM (2017)

i had the album on constant loop, i wanted to find every single thing i could find about sir Duval, i couldn't find any interviews and he has no instagram, the only thing that we know about duval is that he makes really cool stuff. i decided to study up on his creatIve collective; Carrying Colour , its a record laBel. it gave me more insight on him and his music. he uses his instruments as paintbrushes, the sounds are colours, minimal but detailed. further comparing his music to still art. although it feels or “looks” like there’s not much going on, each sound is purposely picked out to convey a feeling. his music gives me synesthesia, especially after looking at the covers. everything is that colour. sen am makes the sun brighter and i instantly attach it to the feeling of youth. his 2020 album feels and looks less exciting, due to the visual aesthetic being dull, being on the inside & not seeing people, etc. i asume this is due to the covid 19 pandemic, it could have took a toll on how he saw things, i don’t think it took away his creative spark, just made it more colourless in a sense.

HELP (2020)

To end off this short review and introduction to my current fave, Listen to Sen Am first, i think that is a perfect introduction into Duval Timothty and his style. He also has a new record out with Rosie lowe titled Son which is also worth the Ear so yes, enjoy it and have a good day.
